The Great Migration, calving season, and big cats at a density few places match
It is the most complete single-country safari in Africa. The Serengeti alone spans calving plains, river crossings and year-round resident predators, and Ngorongoro has the highest lion density anywhere. Chimpanzee trekking at Mahale, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, is the outlier most people do not know about.

The Mara is the best big-cat country in East Africa, and the conservancies around it allow off-road and night driving the reserve does not. What makes Kenya distinctive, though, is the north: Samburu holds reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk, none of which occur further south.

Botswana holds the largest elephant population on the continent and the best wild dog viewing anywhere. The Okavango also changes the mechanics of safari — mokoro and boat, not only vehicle. Low-volume, high-cost tourism policy means very few vehicles at a sighting.

You can land in Kigali and be trekking gorillas the following morning — no other gorilla destination is that quick. Permits are the most expensive in Africa, and that is deliberate: the money underwrites the conservation that brought the population back.

Uganda is the only place that reliably combines gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, and Kibale is the best chimp forest in Africa. Which country for a first safari?
Three answers, depending on what you have.
A week or less: South Africa. Short flights, short transfers, the most dependable Big Five and malaria-free options if you are travelling with children.
Ten days or more: Tanzania or Kenya. More animals, more drama, and the migration if your dates line up. We compare them directly in Kenya vs Tanzania.
A second or third safari: Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe. Fewer vehicles, wilder country, and activities — walking, canoeing, boats — that the big-name parks do not permit. See Botswana vs East Africa.
Combining countries
Most of the best itineraries we build cross a border, because the pairings are genuinely complementary rather than repetitive.
Kenya and Tanzania follow the migration across the whole ecosystem rather than half of it. Rwanda or Uganda with Kenya puts gorillas and plains game in one trip — the single most requested combination we plan. Botswana with Zimbabwe pairs the Okavango with Victoria Falls and Hwange over short hops. Tanzania with Zanzibar ends a safari on the coast.
The caution is nights. Every border adds travel, so a two-country trip under ten nights usually costs you more in transit than it gains in variety.
Common questions
Which African country has the most animals?
Tanzania, by most measures. It combines the Serengeti ecosystem, the Ngorongoro Crater and the vast southern parks, and supports the Great Migration as well as very high resident predator numbers.
Which country is best for seeing the Big Five?
South Africa is the most reliable, particularly the Sabi Sand and Kruger, because rhino and leopard - the two hardest members - are both dependable there. Kenya and Tanzania offer all five but rhino sightings are far less certain.
Where can I see gorillas in Africa?
Only three countries: Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda has the shortest journey from the airport; Uganda is less expensive and lets you combine gorillas with chimpanzees.
Can I see the Great Migration in Kenya or Tanzania?
Both. The herds spend most of the year in Tanzania and cross into Kenya roughly July to October. Where you should be depends entirely on your month, which our Great Migration calendar sets out.
