How much is a gorilla permit in Uganda?
US$800 per person per trek under the Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff in force since July 2024. The four-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga is US$1,500. Official source: ugandawildlife.org. Information reviewed August 2026.
Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda is faster to reach and has the most polished lodges; Uganda costs roughly half per permit, holds about half of the world’s mountain gorillas in Bwindi, and adds chimpanzees and savannah in one loop. We plan both and will tell you honestly which suits your dates and budget.
How many mountain gorillas are left?
Just over 1,000 individuals across the Virunga Massif and Bwindi, according to the most recent coordinated censuses — a rare conservation success, with numbers rising. Roughly half range in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
When is the best time to visit Uganda?
The drier windows of December to February and June to September offer the easiest trekking and game viewing. Bwindi is rainforest, so showers happen in every month — good boots and gaiters matter more than the calendar.
Do US citizens need a visa for Uganda?
Yes — an eVisa (currently US$50) must be applied for online in advance at visas.immigration.go.ug. The East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100) covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda together. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. Information reviewed August 2026.
How do I get around Uganda — are the drives long?
Road transfers are long — Entebbe to Bwindi is roughly 8 to 10 hours — so our luxury itineraries use scheduled light aircraft, putting Bwindi about 90 minutes from Entebbe, with helicopter options for remote sectors.
