Rwanda or Uganda?
Both are exceptional. The right choice depends on your budget, fitness and how you want to combine your trek with the rest of your safari.
Volcanoes National Park
The easiest and most refined option — roughly 2–3 hours by road from Kigali, with the most luxurious lodges. Permits are USD 1,500 per person.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
More gorilla families, lower-cost permits at USD 800 per person, and a natural pairing with a broader wildlife safari and chimpanzee tracking.

Trekkers must be at least 15 years old — strictly enforced in both countries.
Hiking time to the gorillas varies daily with their movements and the terrain.
A maximum of eight trekkers visit each habituated family per day, keeping it intimate.

Best time to trek
Trekking is possible all year, but the drier months make the forest trails easier and the gorillas easier to reach. Permits for peak months sell out far ahead.
The long dry season — the most popular and easiest time to trek. Book permits 4–9 months ahead.
A second drier window — excellent conditions and slightly easier permit availability.
Wetter “green” season — muddier trails but lush forest, fewer trekkers and lower-season permit discounts in Uganda.
Who you'll meet in the forest
Gorillas are the headline act, but the forests of Rwanda and Uganda hold three extraordinary primate encounters — each with its own trek, permit and season.
Mountain gorilla
Around 1,000 remain, all in the wild. An hour with a habituated family — silverback, mothers, tumbling infants — is often described as one of the most moving wildlife encounters anywhere. Treks run from 1 to 6+ hours; groups are capped at 8 guests per family.

Fast, loud and thrillingly close to us — chimp trekking is a completely different energy from the gorillas' calm. Kibale holds East Africa's highest density, with sighting success above 90%.

Where you’ll stay for gorilla trekking
Where you stay is selected privately around your journey, and for gorillas the choice starts with geography. In Rwanda the lodges sit within a short drive of the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi, where every trek begins, so the decision is about setting and style: a forest lodge with a fireplace and spa for after the trek, a small owner-run house, or a private villa with its own staff. In Uganda, Bwindi is trekked from four separate sectors and permits are issued for a specific one, so we choose your lodge and your permit together; the sector decides the terrain, the gorilla families you may meet and how far you travel on trek day.
Beyond location we weigh the things that shape a trek: an early breakfast and a private vehicle to the briefing, porters and walking sticks arranged, a guide who knows the trackers, laundry for muddy kit, and a quiet afternoon afterwards. We do not rank lodges into fixed categories; each property is chosen for the people traveling and the season, and your proposal names every lodge with what is included at that property, so nothing is assumed.

Yes, and it is the way most of our guests do it. Kigali is the easiest gateway: Volcanoes National Park is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the airport, and scheduled and charter flights link Kigali with Nairobi, Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti airstrips in one to two hours. From Uganda, Entebbe connects to Nairobi in about an hour, though Bwindi itself is a full day from Entebbe by road or a short flight plus a drive.
A comfortable shape is two or three nights near the gorillas, with one or two treks, joined to five to seven nights on safari. We usually place the trek at the start, when legs are fresh and the excitement is highest, or at the very end as the crescendo; never on the same day as an international connection. Allow a night in Kigali or at the park before an early trek, and keep one spare morning in case a trek is long.
Permits are fixed-date and limited, so the trek dates are set first and the safari is built around them. Flight schedules between the countries change by season; we confirm current routings for your dates before anything is booked and show every sector in your proposal.
