What are the best luxury safari experiences in Africa?
The ones that give you time and space: a private guide and vehicle, an exclusive-use villa or camp, a hot-air balloon over the Serengeti or the Maasai Mara, a mokoro through the Okavango Delta, an hour with mountain gorillas in Rwanda or Uganda, and the Great Migration river crossings from July to October. The right choice depends on the season and on who is traveling, which is why we start with the experience and then choose the destination.
How much does a luxury safari experience cost?
Every journey is priced to your budget, because the camps, the season, the number of nights and flights between parks all move the total. As a guide, luxury safari camps and lodges typically run from about $1,000 to $3,000 or more per person per night, and the June to October peak costs noticeably more than the green season. Activities such as balloon flights and gorilla permits are added separately. Our private journeys begin at approximately $12,000 per person, excluding international flights.
Which safari experiences should be booked first?
Gorilla permits, balloon flights in migration season and the small camps and villas that suit private travel are limited in number, so we secure them first, often nine to twelve months ahead for dry-season dates. The rest of the journey is then built around them.
Can we combine several experiences in one safari?
Yes, and most journeys do. Classic pairings are the Serengeti or the Maasai Mara with gorilla trekking and a few days on Zanzibar, or the Okavango Delta with Victoria Falls and Cape Town. Light aircraft make these combinations practical without losing days to the road.
