Rwanda questions, answered
How much is a gorilla permit in Rwanda?
US$1,500 per person per trek, issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Permits are limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day, so we secure them months ahead. Information reviewed August 2026.
How hard is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Treks range from about thirty minutes to six hours on steep volcanic slopes, at altitude. Porters are available and trackers locate the families ahead of you. The minimum age is 15.
Is Rwanda good for a full safari, not just gorillas?
Yes, in a compact way. Akagera in the east is a restored Big Five savannah with boat safaris on Lake Ihema, and Nyungwe in the south offers chimpanzees and a canopy walkway. For vast migration-scale plains, we usually pair Rwanda with Tanzania or Kenya.
When is the best time to visit Rwanda?
The drier windows of June to September and December to February make trekking easier and the trails less muddy. Gorillas are tracked year-round, and this is rainforest, so brief rain is possible in any month.
Do US citizens need a visa for Rwanda?
A 30-day tourist visa is issued on arrival to all nationalities, currently US$50. The East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100) covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda together. Confirm current rules at the official portals irembo.gov.rw or migration.gov.rw. Information reviewed August 2026.
How do I get to Rwanda from the US?
There are no nonstop US flights; one-stop routings via Doha, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi reach Kigali in roughly 17 to 20 hours door to door. Volcanoes National Park is then a scenic 2.5 to 3 hour drive, or a short helicopter transfer.
