Sossusvlei & the Namib

The tallest dunes on earth, and the ghost trees of Deadvlei.

Overview

Sossusvlei is the Namib Desert’s great amphitheater — apricot dunes rising 300 meters above white clay pans, at their most vivid in the first hour after dawn. Deadvlei, its famous neighbor, holds 900-year-old camelthorn skeletons black against the clay: one of the most photographed scenes on the planet.

The surrounding NamibRand and private desert reserves offer some of the darkest certified night skies on earth, quad-bike and e-bike dune excursions, and hot-air ballooning over a sea of sand.

Sossusvlei & the Namib FAQs

Enter the park at gate opening and go straight to Deadvlei — the low sun lights the dune wall while the pan stays in shadow, which is the classic shot. Staying inside the park boundary or on a private reserve gets you there first.

Two nights minimum — one dawn for the dunes and Deadvlei, plus time for the desert itself: ballooning, star beds and the small desert creatures on a guided dune walk.

It is a desert experience rather than a game-viewing one — oryx, springbok and ostrich dot the plains, but you come for landscape, silence and stars. Pair it with Etosha for wildlife.
