The gorilla trekking safari itinerary, day by day

A gorilla trekking safari itinerary built around two encounters that change people — a permitted hour with mountain gorillas in the Virunga forests, then big cats on the Mara’s golden plains.

Nothing here is fixed — this is the shape we design most often. Tell us what to keep, stretch or swap, and your version arrives priced and complete.

Best time to go

June–September — drier trekking in the Virungas and migration season in the Mara.

US travelers: check current entry requirements for each country on travel.state.gov — we also walk you through visas at booking.

Day 1

Kigali

Arrive Rwanda; city tour and the moving Genocide Memorial before heading to the volcanoes.

Days 2–4

Volcanoes NP

Two gorilla treks (permits secured and included — $1,500 each, limited to 96 visitors daily) plus golden monkeys, from a luxury forest lodge.

Day 5

Nairobi

Fly to Kenya; overnight and regroup.

Days 6–9

Maasai Mara

Private-conservancy game drives, balloon over the plains and sundowners over the Mara River.

Day 10

Good to know

Questions about this journey

Yes — quoted separately at cost, secured the moment you confirm dates. Permits are strictly limited and are the first thing we book; everything else is built around them.

Comfortable walking 1–4 hours on steep forest paths. Rangers match groups to fitness, and porters (hire them — it funds the villages) make an enormous difference.

Rwanda is the shortest journey — the volcanoes are 2.5 hours from Kigali versus a long day’s travel in Uganda — with the most luxurious lodges. Uganda costs less per permit; we’ll lay out both.
