For US travelers

Know before you go

The practical details we handle for you — flights, entry, health and money — summarized here so nothing surprises you. Requirements can change, so we confirm everything when you book.

01

Getting there from the USA

Fly via Dubai, Paris or Johannesburg — about 20 hours from the US East Coast. The island's single airport puts most resorts within a 60–90 minute transfer.

02

Visas & entry

US citizens don't need a visa — you're stamped in for up to 90 days on arrival with proof of accommodation and onward travel.

03

Health

Mauritius is malaria-free with excellent medical care — the easiest no-shots beach add-on in the Indian Ocean.

04

Money & tipping

The Mauritian rupee is local, but resorts run cashless on cards. A 10% gesture for exceptional staff is plenty.

Love a good deal? Ask about the green season

In the rainy months many of these same camps drop their rates by 20–40% — emerald landscapes, newborn wildlife, superb birding and far fewer vehicles. Peak season isn't the only great season: tell us your budget and we'll show you what the green season buys.

answered before you ask

The practical details that apply to every safari we plan — so this page is the only one you need.

Money & tipping

US dollars are accepted at virtually every camp, and cards work at lodges and city hotels. Your trip is fully inclusive, so cash is mainly for tips: plan on roughly $10–20 per guest per day for your guide and $10–15 for camp staff, handed over at the end of each stay. We send exact guidance with your final documents.

Health & safety

See a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before departure for routine shots and malaria advice (most safari regions require prophylaxis; parts of South Africa are malaria-free). Camps are remote but professionally run, with radio contact and evacuation cover — we require travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation.

Staying connected

Nearly all lodges have Wi-Fi in the main areas (often in-tent too), and an eSIM from your US carrier covers the cities. Expect to be offline on game drives — most guests come to see that as the point. Family back home can always reach you through us, day or night.

What to pack

Soft duffel bags only (light aircraft cap luggage around 33 lb / 15 kg), neutral-colored layers for cold mornings and warm afternoons, and binoculars. Laundry is included at almost every camp, so pack for 4–5 days no matter the trip length.

No — most nationalities including US, UK and EU receive 60 days on arrival. Fill in the all-in-one digital travel form before departure and you walk straight through.

May to December is cooler and drier; January to March is cyclone season, though direct hits are rare. The west and north coasts stay calmest year-round.

One of our favorite pairings — South Africa’s Big Five then four hours by direct flight to a beachfront suite. Many resorts add genuine honeymoon privileges we arrange in advance.

Yes, completely — no prophylaxis needed, which makes it an easy finish for families and honeymooners after a malarial safari region.

Warm season (November–April): 77–86°F (25–30°C), humid, with brief tropical showers. Cool season (May–October): dry, sunny 75°F (24°C) days with evenings around 63°F (17°C) — pack a light layer for dinner. The west and north coasts stay calmest and warmest year-round.

It is arguably the most family-polished island in the Indian Ocean: malaria-free, superb kids’ clubs at nearly every top resort, sheltered lagoons where children can swim at any tide, and enough activity (golf, hiking, catamarans) for every generation. An easy, direct pairing after a South African safari.
