Day by day

The 12 day southern Africa itinerary, day by day

A 12 day southern Africa itinerary — Cape Town and the Winelands, the thunder of Victoria Falls, and water safaris in the Okavango Delta, joined by short flights.

Nothing here is fixed — this is the shape we design most often. Tell us what to keep, stretch or swap, and your version arrives priced and complete.

Best time to go

May–October gives dry-season game viewing and high Delta water; November–March is Cape Town at its best, with a greener, quieter Delta.

US travelers: check current entry requirements for each country on travel.state.gov — we also walk you through visas at booking.

Days 1–4

Cape Town & the Cape peninsula

Table Mountain early, Boulders and Cape Point, and the Atlantic seaboard at sunset. Time to do nothing as well as everything.

Days 5–6

Franschhoek Winelands

Vineyard lunches, cellar tastings and one properly long dinner in South Africa’s best eating village.

Days 7–8

Victoria Falls

Fly north to the Zambezi. The Falls on foot, sundowners on the river, and helicopter flights for those who want the whole span at once.

Days 9–11

Okavango Delta

Light aircraft from Maun into the Delta — mokoro channels, boat safaris and island game drives, all on private concessions.

Day 12

Home

Fly Maun to Johannesburg for your onward flight.

Questions about this journey

Comfortably, because the flights are short and each stop gets three or four nights. This is the classic southern grand tour, and the only thing we would add is two nights in a Kruger private reserve for leopard.

The Zimbabwe side gives you the broad panoramic views and easier walking; Zambia gives you Devil’s Pool in low water. We usually base you in Zimbabwe and cross for a day — the visa arrangement makes it simple.

Cape Town and the Winelands are malaria-free. The Falls and the Delta are low to moderate risk depending on season — we tell you what your travel clinic will advise, well before you go.

Most of our travelers arrive the old-fashioned way — sent by someone who just came home.
